Foodie Friday: Grandma's Strawberry Jam

8/28/2015

For a long time now, I've been trying to compile my Grandma Cramer's recipes into a family cookbook. Anyone who has attempted such a project knows that the end is never in sight. One more recipe can always be found, font tweaked, mistake made . . . you get the picture. I'd like to finish while we're all still alive—including Grandma—but until then, I thought I'd post a recipe here on occasion.

There's a moment from my childhood that's a favorite with some of the adults in my family—particularly Grandma—that is brought up whenever strawberry jam makes the table (which is often): At a family dinner all the adults were involved in their adult conversations leaving toddler me blissfully forgotten at the table. I was remembered when I exclaimed "Oh, Grandma, this is good!" (or something to that effect) whilst spooning the heavenly red nectar that is Grandma's homemade strawberry jam into my mouth. I have never tasted another strawberry jam quite as good nor with the same consistency as hers.

This is a recipe I have coveted. I have asked twice for said recipe and both times she has said, "Oh it's so easy! The recipe's right there on the back of the Certo box." I have a hard time believing that the glorious substance I've slathered on countless dinner rolls could be found on the back of a box. And I must admit that I haven't tried it yet. But here
is the link to the CERTO Strawberry Freezer Jam recipe in case she's telling the truth.

This is what euphoria tastes like.
UPDATE (8/31/15): I made it. It tastes just like Grandma's. My life is now complete.

sacred sunday: An introduction

Faith and "the Church" are inseparable from my family's culture. Good or bad, religion has always permeated our extended family get-togethers. My dad's a pastor, both grandfathers are retired ministers, one of my uncles isn't a pastor . . . you get the picture. I had often thought that this was just a fairly recent family "thing", but as I unearth and learn about more of my ancestors, the Reverend title pops up everywhere.

Of course I'm going to make this into a regular (regular as in 'those Sundays when I feel like it') blog feature! In future Sacred Sunday blog posts, I'll be highlighting the churches, Reverends, historical movements, holy days, and religious documents that have helped shape my Family.

So it's been awhile since my last post. We were still in the middle of the longest winter of my life (or so it seemed) when my long hiatus began, and now that I've returned, summer is coming to a close (as much as that hurts my heart to say.) Between having to replace my computer, helping to plan a family wedding, working two jobs, and the World Cup, the habit of blogging (which had barely begun to be a habit) was disrupted. But now I'm back.

In our family lives, especially when travel took much longer, people, not just habits, sometimes go on hiatus. Things like war, opportunities, work, and leisure could take a member (or members) of a family away from the home for long periods of time. My 2nd great-grandfather, Jeremiah Monroe Deem, went on many such hiatuses. The one I want to explore today became permanent. (Nothing like returning on a happy note . . . )
