9/11 — 15 years later…

I can remember a few events prior to 2001 that caused me to become a news junkie for a few days or hours. The first was watching the LAPD chase a white Bronco. It was 1994 and I was 7 years old. It's a very brief, but notable memory. The week that both Princess Diana and Mother Teresa died was another. I remember watching Princess Di's funeral and feeling like I had lost my princess. These events affected me, but September 11, 2001 was on another level. I was older, it happened on my soil, in my state, and presented a very real threat. I was in my 9th grade AP Biology class when they made the announcement over the school's PA system. By then I think both towers had been hit. When we finally went home, I watched all the news coverage I could. Like a lot of us did. But until a few days ago, I had no real connection to the tragedy. I had no face to connect to the names read every year. As I was working to add one of my Ancestry DNA matches to my tree, I discovered that this particular match had a sister who was working at 2 World Trade Center on the 89th floor that fateful day. Her name was Mary Lou Hague and she is my 6th cousin. When I watch the documentaries or hear the names being read aloud, I know that I don't just share a human bond but a familial one, however distant, with at least one of the souls taken from us that day.

Let me tell you about a special friend in my life…

Nedra ("Sissie") my beautiful sister, less than two years older than I, and taken from us so soon at the age of 29, leaves fond memories of the path we shared. We sang duets of the hymn, "All things are ready, come to the feast…" with Nedra singing the alto. We joined the Calcutta United Presbyterian Church at the same time and when we were still quite young a photographer took our picture, which wasn't very good of me! When I went away to ENC generous Nedra gave me a beautiful winter coat with velvet trim. She was so creative. For speech class she wrote a story—so good the teacher thought she copied it from somewhere! When most kids were lugging books home, Nedra was empty-handed, but maintained good grades. She was bright and beautiful and left a big empty space in our family. Nedra Marie—my sister, my friend.

Would you like to know how I came to have faith in God? Let me tell you my story.

As a child I attended Sunday School on Sunday mornings and the Junior Missionary meetings in the evening at the Calcutta United Presbyterian Church with my sisters. We had dedicated teachers whom I still remember and appreciate. My sister Nedra and I were baptized there and I recall attending a revival service in that church. Even during those early days the Holy Spirit dealt with my young heart. When we moved to another section in town I occasionally attended Sunday School at LaCroft Church of the Nazarene. Then one Wednesday evening your aunt Sara and I decided we would go to prayer meeting, only to find prayer meeting was cancelled that night. Revival meetings were being held that week with Rev. Harold Willis and his wife, Mae. At the close of the service that Wednesday, when the altar call was given, I went forward. I didn't know much about what was going on, but I know one thing: from that point on my life was headed in the right direction because Jesus died on the cross that I might have forgiveness of sins. He is so good and has never failed me!

If I could plan a perfect day enjoying nature, this is what I'd like to do:

I would like to find a log cabin nestled in the mountains with evergreens all around and a sparkling stream of water flowing nearby. Cotton-tailed deer would live in that setting and be tame enough to come near the cabin to entertain us with their frolicking.

Lovely flowers (which the deer had no appetite for) would adorn both the front and back of the abode and a variety of fish could be seen in the crystal clear brook.

Blackberries would be in walking distance with no bears in the area to devour them.

The weather would be sunny, but cool enough to enjoy a day outside with God's creation.

Here is my prayer for your life:

Our kind and loving Heavenly Father, I thank you for sending Jessica into our family to brighten our way. What a blessing she is! I pray that you will watch over her and guide her in the way she should go. May she keep you first in her life, using the unique talents you gave her to win others to Jesus and to encourage many along the way. I pray that she will find happiness in serving the Lord and that the lives of many will be changed because Jessica has passed their way. In Jesus' name, amen.

Here's what I remember about one walk when I was a little girl…

One place near our house that I vividly remember from childhood is Lyon's Hill. I remember going up that hill one wintry day on my way to the bus stop where I caught a bus to go downtown to do Christmas shopping. (People traveled that hill to get on the main road out of the side communities.) This particular day my heart was light and full of happy anticipation because Daddy had given each of us kids $5.00 to do our Christmas shopping!

A good decision I made was…

deciding to attend ENC. This opened a whole new part of the country to me. I had never traveled very far from my small town of East Liverpool, O., and going to school in New England and meeting students from many other areas was a great eye-opener. Plus—being in a Christian school was great. A big bonus, of course, was meeting someone with whom I would spend the rest of my life—your Grandpa!

Let me tell you how God helped me through a tough time:

When Aunt Thelma passed away, Grandpa, as her only living sibling*, felt responsible for overseeing the settlement of her affairs. Some of the family, not understanding the law nor how things were done when a person died without a will, caused a big rumpus, making Grandpa and me feel like outcasts. Trusting God to help us through and with the help of an encouraging lawyer, the estate was settled. This was on of the most difficult times of my life but God was with us. He never fails!

*Uncle Bill was still living but unable to tend to things.

I remember one of the "bumps" in my life. Here's what I did and how it turned out:

When my last year of college arrived I was faced with the challenge of finding a teaching job. I was offered a job at Woodward School for Girls in Quincy, MA where I had done my practice student teaching, which I did not accept, due to low salary.

I then took a bus to a town near the college for an interview, but did not get the job. When no other job opened up, I decided to stay on at the bakery where I had worked during much of my college days.

In the meantime Grandpa and I were married and later moved to Mansfield, MA where Grandpa served as Director of Christian Education at a prominent Congregational church in town. In January I was hired as a 5th grade teacher at Park Row School which proved to be a valuable experience. Our work with the kids at the church and my experience teaching brought us into contact with many people in that small town and were were a real part of the community.

Here is a fond memory I have of each person in my family:

Mom — Her offer to buy me a new coat when she probably needed one, not me.
Dad — Praising me by saying "JoAnn memorizes the dictionary" which of course I did not! — The day he called me in Pawtucket to tell the good news of his conversion.
Sara — How she helped me make headpieces for our wedding.
Nedra — Her generosity in giving me a beautiful winter coat.
Gloria — The 6 mos. we lived with her and Ron while our house was being built.
Dottie — Her glowing testimony.
Gillie — Her wonderful meals and words of encouragement.
Dick — How he would say I was his favorite sister. Of course he said this to all his sisters.
Notes: "Mom" is Viola Mae Thorne Deem Montgomery. "Dad" is Gilbert Roy Deem.
